Congrats to September Member of the Month, Erica!
Here’s a little more about Erica!
How did you get started with strength training?
In the late 90s/early 2000s, I had been part of another all-women’s gym, and when it closed, I followed my trainer from gym to gym until she ultimately stopped training to pursue another career path. The “FitCamp” classes were similar to our endurance classes at Dragonfly, combining strength and endurance, and I loved the strength part! I started doing strength training with a friend/trainer once a week after that, and also joined a “big box” gym, for cardio and equipment, but never really got into a good groove there. Then one day, I saw a FB ad for a small-group, women-only, four-week session in Francis Park and I thought, “hey, I should try this out. If I don’t like it, it’s only four weeks.” As Renah and Missy know, that was 8 years ago, so I obviously liked the program!
What’s your favorite exercise or equipment to use at Dragonfly these days?
Tire flipping, hands down! I was reluctant when Renah first introduced this equipment, but was hooked after my first flip. Something about flipping a giant tire makes me feel like a badass! I also love anything with a barbell: deadlifts, rows, presses!
What motivates you to stay consistent with your training?
The biggest motivation is how strong I feel – both physically and mentally. Working with the coaches and members to push through progressions has really shown me what I’m capable of. My confidence levels – across all aspects of my life – have improved thanks to the training at Dragonfly!
What personal record or accomplishment are you most proud of in the last 8 – 12 weeks? (Humble brag away!!)
Thanks to encouragement and some tips and tricks from Missy, I’m moving closer and closer to a true wall stand – something I’ve been terrified of from day 1! I’ve also progressed my hollow hang game back to (and beyond) my pre-COVID time, and am setting progression goals there, too. And, while it’s not in the last 8 – 12 weeks, I’m proud of how far I’ve coming in my rowing skills! (Row Erica rarely makes an appearance any more!)
We’re always cranking up the music in class – what’s one jam that really pumps you up? Or is there one specifically for Strength and one that’s better in Endurance?
Ooh … tough question. My music interests are all over the map, so it really depends on the day and the class. I love the Dragonfly Super Woman play list (in Renah’s Spotify profile). And Denise always picks great playlists for Saturday morning Hurricanes (generally classic rock for workouts). And any good dance songs, because who doesn’t love to have a little dance party between sets?
