Congratulations to September Member of the Month, Kristen!
Kristen was nominated this month by Coach Renah. She has been able to coach Kristen regularly on Thursdays and has loved seeing how strong Kristen is getting! It's so fun to watch her go back for a heavier kettlebell for swings (a movement that she wasn't always able to do) and I saw her eyes light up when I asked her if she wanted to move to the barbell for bench presses!
Kristen works hard, is consistent, is always smiling and she's always ready for a laugh (I mean she was totally down with me standing on a box so I didn't look so short lol)! She's kind and supportive of others and she deserves a huge shout out for all of her hard work!
Here's more about Kristen!
What separates your experience at Dragonfly from other things you've tried in the past? As an adult, the only competitor to Dragonfly (for me) is working out at home. I will be the first to admit that I find working out at home challenging—there is always something else to do. We have a Peloton bike, which I find to be a good workout. At least that’s how I remember it since it’s been nearly 3 months since my last ride. Case in point!
With Dragonfly, it’s so much easier for me. The combination of my weekly rhythm and financial commitment is all I need to get my classes scheduled. As an added bonus, I don’t have to develop a workout routine; that part is already done. AND most importantly, there is a coach to ensure that my form is correct.
Does the Dragonfly community play a part in your gym experience? Since I live in Illinois, the community aspect was not a high priority for me. That said, there is an incredible camaraderie in every class—especially my regular Tuesday and Thursday strength classes. These women are inspirational (and fun)! And I am pleasantly surprised to have true friendships through Dragonfly.
What is something that used to be intimidating at the gym but now you love it and/or how might you encourage others that might be nervous? In my eight years at Dragonfly, I have evolved in my thinking and approach. I initially thought I had to be speedy, strong, and master all of the movements. Then there was a back injury. After physical therapy, I returned to Dragonfly with a new philosophy—listen to my body. I’m no “spring chicken,” but there are plenty of movements I can do. And I do it for my health. Literally. All of my physicians encourage strength conditioning, so it’s no longer a luxury for me, but rather part of my overall health regimen.
I used to be intimidated by the younger women, the super strong, or the obvious athletes. That is no longer the case, because I know that I am strong—and getting stronger! While my time at Dragonfly is a personal journey, I feel supported by the cumulative strength of all Dragonfly women.
Okay, I’ll admit that I had no interest in the bench press for many years. It just seemed like something for other people. However, with some encouragement and my own curiosity, I learned to bench press this year. It wasn’t a huge weight, but it was enough for me. The best part was that I felt stronger! I think listening to your body and remaining open are keys to thriving at Dragonfly (plus a sense of humor). ;)
Congrats and thanks for being such a fantastic member Kristen!
Each month Dragonfly coaches nominate members who are standing out, overcoming obstacles, and giving it their all. It’s always a hard choice to decide upon one!
