Congratulations to our January Member of the Month, Jenni!
Jenni gives her all in class and is very engaged – focusing on form and making sure to get the most out of each movement. She’s a great cheerleader & partner to her fellow Dragonfly members as well – her enthusiasm is contagious!
We asked Jenni a few questions about her training experience and here’s what she had to say:
What’s your favorite workout or exercise?
It’s hard to choose just one! I really love how strong and empowered Lift classes can make me feel, but I also love the fast and furious cardio that happens in the Hurricane workouts. I guess I like it all. In terms of moves, I really love the arm balance stuff we’ve been working on, that incorporates not just strength but also getting over the mental hurdle of throwing your legs up in the air! I also love single-leg deadlifts because they too are complex, pulling in core strength, balance, and recruitment of lots of muscle groups.
What motivates you to keep consistent with your workouts?
I like the way working out makes me feel, both physically and mentally. It’s a stress reliever, something I can do to improve my health and my quality of life, it organizes my mind and my day. I feel better about myself which makes me a better partner and friend. When I work out I’m accomplishing something for myself, not for anyone else, and achieving those workout goals lets me know that I can achieve other goals in other parts of my life. Also, Im a total crab to be around when I’m not working out consistently.
What did your fitness journey look like before coming to Dragonfly?
I was a runner. While I came to running late (my late thirties) I ran a lot. I ran with running groups, had running buddies, was a pace coach for a local running store program. I ran six days a week and tackled over 25 half marathons and two fulls. I did some other strength training, but mostly I ran. Until my knees blew up on me. Ive had the meniscus in my left knee done twice, and the right one, well, its probably shot too. And then I couldn’t run anymore. And I felt like my life was over. So much of who I was and even my social life was tied to running. I was looking for a way to get in touch with my physical self, but I didn’t know what to do. My friend Claire Wyneken had been going to Dragonfly for a while, so I thought I’d give it a try. I feel like I’m starting to find that home again that I had when running. And while I’ve done strength training quite a bit over the years, I’ve never done anything like this. I’m so glad I found Dragonfly!
What personal record or accomplishment are you most proud of?
CHIN UP! What?!?! If I only could take the Presidential Fitness Test from grade school now! And also the 155 lb. deadlift.
Bonus – if you could have one superpower, what would it be?
X-ray vision that uncovers the hidden potential in people so that I could show each person how awesome they are.
