I have a serious sweet tooth, but I’ve learned to manage it. And I’ve found a little better “treats” that fit the bill when I’m on the hunt for something sweet. (Now, I do go all-out sometimes…but I don’t wanna do that all the time. I mean I could, but…) And I have my good ole standbys like Greek yogurt and fruit and dark chocolate, but I also have some others that are really super easy. There are no recipes here (except for the last ones), but I’m sure that you can find some specifics if you look online. What’s great is that you may already have the items needed on hand.
Speaking honestly…I know that I’m probably going to want something that falls into the sweet-ish category at some point this week, so why not be prepared with some better options so I don’t find myself at the bottom of a pint of ice cream? With these options I don’t feel guilty one bit. And I’m totally satisfied because #1 they are tasty and #2 I made them myself (that makes me feel happy and in control)!
Broiled Banana with Dark Chocolate
Laugh if you will, but I’m on to something here. Turn your oven to broil (low usually works better for me…but these in photo were on high…oops). Slice your banana, put some dark chocolate squares on it and put it in the oven. Time will vary, but it won’t take too long…a few minutes or more depending on what you’re going for. So don’t walk away and forget about what you’re doing (not that I’ve ever done that 😉 )…stay close and keep an eye on it. You can do this with quite a few fruits by the way. AND you can also put it in the microwave if you cannot wait or don’t want to mess with the oven. It won’t look pretty, but it’s still good! (AND if you happen to be grilling…fruit from the grill is yummy.) My favorite dark chocolate to use is Trader’s Joes Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Bar.
Whipped Coconut Milk
Chill a can of full-fat coconut milk in the fridge overnight. When you open it the cream will all be at the top. Scoop it out, whip it up (I just stir it for a few minutes) and there you go! Add some of the water in the can to reach the desired thickness. You could add a little honey, but I think it’s tasty by itself. This takes almost no time!
One great thing about this versus Reddi-Wip (which is also not a totally bad alternative, it is low in calories and almost no sugar) is that you are very likely to eat less…the fat in this is going to make it more filling.
You could eat it plain or put on top of fruit. I’m also just now thinking that you could drop a spoonful in your coffee, but I’ve not done that yet.
Frozen Yogurt Bites
Options are endless here, but you do have to wait for these to freeze. Get your berries or whatever fruit you’d like to use and put them in a bowl. Mash them up to your liking. Add in your yogurt. I used about one serving (Siggi’s) mixed with blueberries and it gave me quite a few bites. I didn’t add anything else to what’s pictured here, but you could mix several fruits, add dark chocolate, and/or add a little cinnamon or honey. Really, there are lots of things you could do to change this up! Put the mixture in an ice cube tray or a mini-muffin pan…(I used a mini muffin pan) and let them freeze. When it was time to retrieve my bites I just flipped the pan over and ran a little warm water over it, and used a knife to pop them right out. (If you’re storing in the freezer, put a piece of wax paper between these so they don’t stick together.)
Banana Nut Butter Sandwiches
Cut your banana into slices, and add a little nut butter between two pieces. Melt some dark chocolate to drizzle on top and put in the freezer for a few hours (on wax paper will make them easier to get off ). I put one sliced almond on top (fancy!) and I would totally serve these at a party…they are so cute. (I know…you’re thinking, I don’t wanna come to that party LOL.)
Protein Shakes & Overnight Oats
I’ve also found that a protein shake can go a long way in helping a sweet craving. And overnight oats. Here’s a Chocolately Goodness Protein Shake Recipe and a Nut Butter Overnight Oats Recipe. (They work for breakfast, snack, or a sweet craving!) Make it a little extra with some coconut flakes or dark chocolate. (Speaking of…combine these two with some cashews and you’ve got yourself something good!)
So there you go. I hope I’ve given you some other ideas about how you can treat yo self! And even though these are a little better options they should still be enjoyed in moderation!
Let me know if you have any other easy ideas or if you try any of these – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
