Congratulations to our March Member of the Month, Toni! Since starting with us in October, Toni has been a positive presence, always cheering others on and being excited to learn.
Coach Missy says that while Toni has lost inches and weight since beginning, the most amazing thing is how much confidence she’s gained. As Coach Renah said, “Toni was nervous about starting, and then a few months later she’s in my deadlift clinic hitting a PR! What can I say?!”
Toni did some personal training sessions to perfect her form and tries all kinds of different classes now. In Renah’s words: “She’s such a joy to have in class and is more inspiring than she’ll ever know.”
We asked Toni about her training, and this is what she had to say:
What do you do for a living?
I’m the buyer at Karr Bick Kitchen and Bath — a Kitchen and Bath dealer. #nothingordinary
Why did you get started with strength training?
Here’s the real kicker — I didn’t even know that’s what I was starting!! I decided at 53 years old that I needed to make some very drastic changes to my lackadaisical and sedentary lifestyle. One of the girls I work with had been a Dragonfly member for a bit of time and seeing her amazing results intrigued me as to how she’d achieved them, so I asked her about it. She was so animated and excited to tell me all the wonderful things about Dragonfly! It still took me a while to set up the consultation with Missy (because I’m a fraidy cat!), but Wendy’s testimonial was swimming around in the back of my mind until I made that call!
What has been the greatest accomplishment in your fitness journey so far?
That I’m still going! I know that sounds ridiculous and not very “fitness-y.” I’d never in my life joined a gym or even been very active. I have really never been a quitter — except when it came to exercising. The fact that I’m still going and loving it is something that shocked me — in the best of ways! I truly give Dragonfly all the credit for that!!
What is one fitness goal you’re working toward right now?
Right now, for me, it’s all about proper form. Other than jumping jacks in the warm-ups, I’d never before done ANY of the movements I’ve learned at Dragonfly — I always thought “burpee” was a freaking seed (hehe)! In all honesty, I was pretty paralyzed by all the terms and reps and movements, but now that Missy and Renah have shown me what to do, I can work to improve my form. I would never have dreamed that sticking my butt out was a good thing!!
Bonus: If you could only do one exercise for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I think I would say rowing. I really feel like I get a good sweat and work out in lots of areas at the same time. (TRX is actually my very favorite, but I think that’s more than one exercise).
