Congratulations to our February Member of the Month, Maggie! The Dragonfly coaches are continually impressed by Maggie’s dedication to giving 100% in each and every class.
Coach Missy says Maggie is always stepping outside her comfort zone to try new things, and Coach Renah loves Maggie’s focus on form to keep movements challenging. And everybody loves her fabulous attitude!
We asked Maggie a bit about her training, and this is what she had to say:
What was your first impression of Dragonfly?
I was incredibly nervous about the idea of getting back into a workout routine and doing so in a much more intimate space from what I was used to. After my consultation, I was feeling less intimidated and was glad to have been greeted with a friendly smile and the encouragement I needed to get through my initial nerves. I hadn’t been to a gym in about 3 years, and I was afraid to see what I could no longer handle while training. After just one class, the coaches at Dragonfly quickly taught me that it’s not about what I can’t do, but what I CAN do. DFT is a community of welcoming and supportive women that inspire me to be my best self.
What’s your favorite thing you’ve accomplished in the last month?
In the last month, I have pushed myself hard to try heavier weights in my training and to open up a bit more to trying different types of workouts. I just recently attended a Member Skills Clinic on deadlifts and surprised myself with how much I could actually lift! I also feel like I am getting closer to one of my original goals of doing pull-ups without any modifications. In keeping with my plan to try new things, I am excited to give BAM a try as well!
What motivates you to stay consistent with your training?
My motivation primarily comes from knowing how great I feel being strong and active. There are definitely days that I would rather stay in bed a bit longer, but I push myself harder those days to get to the gym because I know the rest of the day will be better because of it. It’s crazy how much my workouts and nutrition play a big part in my health both physically and mentally. In the past six months, I have been sick far less than normal, and I have been able to gain more confidence in myself in and out of the gym.
What would you say to someone afraid to get started with strength training?
Give yourself a shot! You will be so surprised at how strong you already are. The coaches at Dragonfly are extremely helpful in explaining setup, form, weight progression, and much more. After I became more comfortable with the equipment, it was empowering to see my progression, and I continue to learn and become stronger every single day. At DFT, there is no feeling of competition with the people around you. Everyone is there to support each other. The only competition is yourself!
Bonus: What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
I am that odd-ball that stays in a job forever, so I’ve never really had a chance to work weird jobs. I guess it’s weird enough that I worked in a grocery store all through high school, college, and a couple years after that. It explains my obsession with properly bagging groceries and either taking over in the store or re-doing it all when I get it to my car. If I could carry that weird obsessive attitude over to my meal prepping, I would be set!
