December Member of the Month: “Results come fast, and you’ll feel great”

Congratulations to our December Member of the Month, Meaghan! The Dragonfly coaches are continually impressed with how dedicated Meaghan is, always challenging herself, while keeping up a positive attitude.

Coach Renah loves how hard Meaghan has worked on her nutrition, thoughtfully working through the lessons and habits. Renah also says Meaghan asks questions during class and works hard to maintain good form as she continues to increase weights and challenge herself. And she ends every workout with a smile!

We asked Meaghan a bit about her training routine, and this is what she had to say:

What’s your favorite exercise/equipment to use?

Lately, I love doing anything with the bar, so dead lifts and front squats. It just makes me feel good — I think partially because I have to set it up myself. That personal aspect really gives me a sense of achievement. I also love L-stands. It’s fun to be upside down!

Most Memorable PR or fitness goal you are working toward?

I have two. The first is deadlifts. I could NOT figure them out for the longest time. I wanted it to be a squat and it’s not, but I couldn’t get my legs to do the right thing. I couldn’t figure out the right weight for me or where my feet should go. I always felt really flustered and insecure about it, which definitely didn’t help. After some physical therapy for a hamstring I didn’t realize was in such bad shape and lots of help from all the coaches, but especially Renah, I got it, and now I feel awesome about it every time.

My second big PR will seem like a small one, but it was huge for me. Just last week, I did a side plank with no modifications. Before I had kids, I wasn’t in terrible shape, and whenever I’d take a class somewhere, side planks were no sweat. When I finally got back to serious workouts at Dragonfly (5 years later), I was painfully humbled by the fact that side planks were so hard for me. It just represented how much my body had changed. So during Dragonfly’s 2017 Turkey Burn when we had to do side planks and I DID IT, I was super pumped!

What would you say to other ladies who might be nervous to start strength training?

DO IT! It’s good for your body, and it’s good for your mind! My biggest issue when I started was being intimidated by unfamiliar equipment and movements. I was pretty insecure about being the one person in class who had no idea what they were doing. First of all, that’s never true! Someone’s always learning something new or doing something they’ve never done, and the only difference between them and you is they’re not afraid to not know.

Second, the trainers at Dragonfly are amazing at helping you figure out what’s best for you pretty quickly — they’ll make you feel comfortable and worthy. If you make the choice to commit despite your hang-ups, you won’t regret it. Results come fast, and you’ll feel great.

Extra: What’s your favorite type of music/specific songs to work out to?

In the group workout setting, I am never picky about what’s playing. All I’m looking for is a beat to keep me going. I frequently find myself enjoying songs I would never listen to on my own. As long as there’s music playing, I’m usually good.
